My heart sank/dropped/plummeted like a stone/weight/anchor to the ground/bottom/floor as I realized/saw/noticed the grim/dire/pathetic reality. I was locked/stranded/trapped outside my own house/apartment/residence, with the only barrier between me and comfort/safety/warmth being a simple/insignificant/easy-to-overlook set of keys in my hand/pocket/grasp. A wave/Suddenly/Instantly of panic/anxiety/desperation washed over me. I had forgotten/misplaced/lost the spare, and the thought of spending/being forced to/having to a long/freezing/dreadful night outside was unthinkable/terrifying/horrible.

Sweat beads formed on my forehead. My heart was hammering against my ribs like a frantic drummer. I stared at the locked/closed/secured car door, its cold metal mocking my predicament. My wallet/purse/bag lay lifelessly on the ground beside me, a painful reminder that the access card were safely trapped inside. This was not how I had pictured ending/finishing/concluding my day.
I tried every/all/each of the usual tricks - jiggling/twisting/prodding the handle, looking for a hidden release/button/latch. Nothing worked. The car remained stubbornly unyielding/resistant/immovable. I felt a wave of panic/frustration/despair wash over me.

That's just great/fantastic/awesome, right? I can't believe/recall/imagine how this happened.
